Japan Calls for Release of Hokkaido Shimbun Reporter at First In-Person Foreign Ministers' Talks in Five Years
Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi met Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov in the United States and strongly urged the immediate release of a Hokkaido Shimbun reporter detained in Sakhalin Oblast on espionage charges. The meeting, lasting about 30 minutes, is the first formal in-person talks between the two foreign ministers since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Japan also requested the resumption of grave visits related to the Northern Territories issue. Russia said meaningful dialogue requires Japan to abandon what it called unfriendly policies, and called for lifting economic sanctions.
