Three arrested over suspected attempt to smuggle rare turtles, including high school student, Osaka

Three people, including a 17-year-old high school student, have been arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle turtles into Japan. Two of the suspects are men who live in Osaka Prefecture, one of them a construction worker. The turtles, 19 in total, were allegedly bought in Thailand in May. Indian star tortoises are subject to international trade restrictions under CITES, and customs officers at Kansai International Airport found them wrapped in damp cardboard inside a suitcase.
