Tax-Free Sales to Foreigners Resold? Brand Goods Company Hit With About 500 Million Yen in Back Taxes Over Improper Refunds
The Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau has imposed roughly 500 million yen in additional taxes on OKURA, a company that buys and sells brand goods, over consumption tax refunds it obtained through tax-free sales. According to sources, the company sold items at tax-free prices to foreign buyers suspected of intending to resell them in Japan without sufficiently checking their eligibility. The additional tax covers about four years of transactions up to last year. TV Asahi's News Station (ANN) says it requested an interview with the company but has not received a response.
