About this videoWritten by AI from the source information

Immune cells can fail to control tumors, and fixing the cells alone does not always work. Miguel Reina-Campos, an Assistant Professor at La Jolla Institute for Immunology, asks whether the tissue structures immune cells move through may be part of the problem. His talk explores whether redesigning that tissue environment could help immune cells do their job. The talk was given at a TEDx event organized independently by a local community. The presentation is framed around the research of the Reina Lab, which studies how immune cells function inside tissues to improve protection against infections and cancer.

In this video
  • Immune cells can fail, allowing tumors to progress
  • Fixing the cells themselves does not always work
  • The talk asks whether the surrounding tissue environment matters
  • Research by the Reina Lab on immune cells in tissues

Description from TEDx Talks

Would you be able to work in a broken, toxic environment? Your immune cells face a similar challenge. When immune cells fail, tumors can progress. But fixing the cells themselves doesn’t always work. Miguel Reina-Campos explores a different question: What if the problem isn’t just the cells, but the tissue structures they move through? Could redesigning that environment help immune cells do their job? His lab studies how immune cells live and function inside tissues, with the goal of improving long-term protection against infections and cancer. He uses advanced technologies to map immune cells in tissue environments and understand how their location shapes immune defense. A biochemist by training, Dr. Reina-Campos obtained a B.Sc. from the Universitat de Barcelona, a M.Sc. from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Scripps Research Institute, a Ph.D. in Biomedical Research at Sanford Burnham Prebys, and completed his Postdoctoral Fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Goldrath at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Reina-Campos is a La Caixa Fellow, which is awarded by the King of Spain, and a Cancer Research Institute Fellow. Dr. Reina-Campos is the co-founder and board member of TCura Bioscience Inc. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
