What if your greatest advantage in investing isn't how much money you have, but how much time you have? When Liliya Strong was growing up in Russia, her father traded company shares for a bag of tangerines. Her mother kept hers, and years later, those same shares helped the family purchase its first car. That experience revealed a powerful lesson: recognizing an opportunity can change what becomes possible. After arriving in the United States with just $600 and limited English, Liliya pursued an education in economics at Columbia University and built a career in equity research. Today, she is the founder of Stocks for Women, where she helps women and young people develop financial knowledge and confidence. In this TEDxMiami Coral Park talk, Liliya explores the barriers that discourage young women from investing, the importance of understanding the businesses behind stocks, and why starting early can make an extraordinary difference through compound growth. Her message is simple: investing is not reserved for the wealthy or the financially experienced. It begins with curiosity, education, and the willingness to recognize an opportunity. An investor, educator, and former equity research analyst, Strong helps women and the next generation understand how the stock market works. She immigrated to the U.S. with $600, no English, and no connections before graduating cum laude from Columbia University with a degree in Economics and spending more than 15 years in equity research. Through disciplined, long-term investing, she built her own financial independence and later had the opportunity to attend a private dinner with Warren Buffett. Today, she focuses on making investing accessible through calm, practical, evidence-based education, particularly for women historically excluded from financial conversations and young people seeking a clear, confident foundation for building wealth. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
