Description de TEDx Talks

When we look at vulnerable communities or regions like Northeast Nigeria, what do we usually see? Headlines often reduce people to their suffering—hunger, displacement, poverty, and a lack of resources. In this moving TEDx talk, Dr. Benjamin John shares a transformative encounter with a malnourished child in Dikwa in 2018 that reshaped their understanding of aid and development. Challenging the habit of viewing communities merely as passive recipients of charity, the talk reveals how vulnerability does not erase capability, resilience, or local knowledge. Discover why lasting change requires shifting our mindset from "What can we do for this community?" to "What can we build with them?"—fostering true partnership, ownership, and sustainable impact. Benjamin John is a development and humanitarian professional focused on improving the lives of vulnerable and crisis-affected communities, particularly in Northeast Nigeria. His work spans education, protection, livelihoods, health, peacebuilding, and community development. As Executive Director of Unique Care and Support Foundation (CASFOD) and a member of the Malala Fund's Education Championship Network, he promotes local ownership, innovation, and collaboration to build resilient communities and create sustainable opportunities. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
