NOTE FROM TED: We've flagged this talk because it falls outside the content guidelines TED gives TEDx organizers. Contents only represent the speaker's personal views and understanding of aesthetics, health, and biology. Some viewers may find elements to be stigmatizing or alienating. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf We're taught from childhood that looks don't matter, but in the real world, they shape everything from dating to hiring to how we feel about ourselves. Mike Israetel, co-founder of RP, breaks down the three forces behind how we see our own appearance: culture, biology, and self-perception. He argues that helping everyone feel at home in their own skin means widening our cultural standards, being kinder to ourselves and each other, and supporting people who choose to change how they look. Mike Isratel is a renowned sports physiologist, educator, and the co-founder of Renaissance Periodization. He holds a PhD in Sport Physiology from East Tennessee State University and is widely recognized online for his expertise in dieting and strength training. Aside from his extensive online presence, he shares his expertise across the globe at various scientific and performance conferences such as the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
