Ethiopia is facing its most serious escalation of conflict since the devastating 2020–2022 Tigray war, with renewed fighting between federal forces and a coalition of armed opposition groups raising fears of a wider regional crisis. Explosions were reported in the capital, Addis Ababa, on October 1, while the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and allied groups intensified their challenge to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. At the heart of the crisis is a new alliance of seven armed groups, including the TPLF, the Amhara Fano militia and the Oromo Liberation Army. The renewed fighting has also strained relations between Ethiopia and neighbouring Eritrea, with both countries severing diplomatic ties. Ethiopia has accused Eritrea, Egypt and Sudan of backing its opponents, allegations those countries deny.
