Dünyadaki birçok şehir stadyumlar, tatil köyleri, kongre merkezleri ve eğlence bölgeleri yaparak turist çekmek için milyarlarca dolar harcıyor. Washington D.C. bölgesinde de benzer projeler öne çıkıyor. Aynı stratejiyi izleyen yerler her zaman aynı sonucu vermiyor; bazıları iş imkanı ve yerel ekonomik büyüme yaşarken bazıları altyapı baskısı, konut maliyetleri ve doğal ve kültürel kaynaklar üzerindeki yük ile karşılaşıyor. Kamu politikası uzmanı ve araştırmacı Dr. Kimberly Clarke bu konuşmada turizmin bazı yerlere neden fayda sağlayıp bazılarını zorladığını inceliyor ve yeni geliştirmeler hakkında sorulması gereken temel soruları paylaşıyor.

TEDx Talks açıklaması

Cities around the world are investing billions of dollars to attract tourists by building stadiums, resorts, convention centers, and entertainment districts, including many projects emerging across the Washington, D.C. region. Yet, places that pursue the same strategy often see very different results. Some destinations experience strong economic growth, new jobs, and vibrant local businesses, while others struggle with overcrowded infrastructure, rising housing costs, and pressure on natural and cultural resources. How can the same strategy lead to such different outcomes? Kimberly’s research explores why tourism benefits some destinations while straining others. In her talk, she reveals the key questions to ask about new development to ensure we strengthen destinations rather than strain them. Dr. Kimberly Clarke is a public policy professional, researcher, and speaker based in the Washington, D.C. area. She holds a PhD from Southern New Hampshire University, holds degrees from Johnson & Wales University, and earned an MBA from Bowie State University. Her research explores how tourism policy can harmonize economic growth with environmental sustainability. Her work bridges academic research with practical strategies that help communities thrive while creating lasting benefits for residents and visitors alike. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
