Hormuz crisis and energy: IMF expects Middle East economy to contract 1.3%

The International Monetary Fund expects economies in the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan to contract by 1.3% in 2026 amid the global energy crisis and shipping disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. The Fund projects growth of more than 6% in 2027, conditional on an end to the conflict and a gradual return of production and shipping. A negative scenario in the report assumes oil reaching $130 a barrel, along with higher gas and food prices. Oil-importing economies are expected to grow by more than 4%, supported by domestic demand, tourism and remittances.
